Discussion Questions – John 4:1-15 – Are You Thirsty?

1. When you are thirsty what do you want to drink? What makes it satisfying?

2. Jesus risked his reputation to talk to the Samaritan woman with a bad reputation. What does that teach us about how God values people?

3. The woman was surprised that Jesus spoke to her. Have you ever been surprised by the way God reached you or someone you know?

4. In the passage, Jesus offers “living water.” What do you think that means in your own words?

5. Jeremiah 2:13 says God’s people turned away from the fountain of living water to dig “cracked cisterns.” What are some things people chase after today that never truly satisfy?

6. How can something good like spending time with family or working hard become unhealthy (bad)?

7. Jesus’ living water leads to eternal life. How does that promise encourage you in your daily struggles or longings?

8. Who in your life is “thirsty”? How can you point them toward Jesus’ living water?

1.     What is one of your favorite treasures? Why does it have value to you?

2.     The sermon compared the Bible to a “treasure.” In what ways have you experienced the Bible as something valuable in your own life?

3.     2 Timothy 3:15 says the Scriptures make us “wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” What does this mean to you personally? 

4.     The passage reminds us that all Scripture is God-breathed. How does believing this affect the way we read and trust the Bible?

5.     The sermon described the Bible as a “map” for our lives. Can you share a time when the Bible gave you direction or clarity in a decision?

6.     Why do you think it can sometimes be difficult to stay consistent in reading the Bible, even though we know it is important to do and is beneficial for us?

7.     Verse 4:2 says to “preach the Word.” How can ordinary Christians—not just pastors—share God’s Word with others?

8.     The sermon acknowledged that some parts of the Bible challenge us or confront our sin. How do you personally respond when Scripture points out something uncomfortable or difficult? 

9.     We don’t read the Bible because we have to, but because it’s a gift from God. How might that perspective change the way you approach daily Bible reading?

5. What is the difference between a person that sins and a person that is controlled by sin?

6. What does it look like for you to use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God?

7. What does righteous living look like?

8. Read Romans 6:23. How does this change how you live?
